Frances Anne Hopkins
Frances Anne (Beechey) Hopkins was born in England and was the granddaughter
of the noted portraitist Sir William Beechey.
In 1858 she married Edward Martin Hopkins, Secretary to Sir George Simpson, Superintendent General
of the Hudson’s Bay Company.
For approximately a decade she traveled the age-old canoe routes
of Canada, accompanying her husband and the Superintendent on their inspection tours of
the Company’s outposts. Although she had little formal art training, Hopkins employed
her natural talent in sketching and painting scenes of the North American waters,
forests, and the voyageurs who traversed them.
