The musician's musician on his spiritual and emotional journey
Best known for his jazz music, veteran guitarist Bheki Khoza, 55, has been described as "a musician's musician of the old school" by Wits professor of social anthropology David Coplan.
Khoza moved to Joburg from Port Elizabeth in the '80s and, through his music, addressed the social conditions of the time.
Unable to record under the apartheid regime, he made a living from performing with his band Thayima.
A practising African Hebrew Israelite since 1998, Khoza, a vegan, studies Hebrew and has visited Israel three times.
He lived with the local African Hebrew community in Protea Glen for five years.
Khoza was musical director of the 2003 documentary Sophiatown, and has mentored many musicians. He spent the early '90s in the US, where he completed his music degree, and continues to perform with his band, Bheki Khoza Quartet, and legends like Dorothy Masuka.
