Elisabeth Buggins, who began her career as a regional administrative trainee in 1974 and has chaired the region's strategic health authority since 2002, said she was "so stunned I had to read the letter again and again".
Ms Buggins admits that her own experiences of the NHS as a patient and a mother have enabled her to see where change and improvements have been needed.
Although she has been honoured for services to healthcare, she added: "I was never working for an honour, only for the patients.
"Health is so important that the more I can do to make the service better and my reward is to see those improve."
She first learned of her place on the New Year Honours' list last month and was sworn to secrecy, which the health boss admits was d
